Something old, something borrowed…

At the kilo sale we get our fair share of outfit inspiration from our customers – whether it’s a colourful hairstyle, a beautiful dress or a customised jacket. That said, sometimes we get a customer who goes that little bit further…how about a wedding dress?

If you were at our Birmingham kilo a few weeks back, you might have spotted Emma Gormally, or should we say, Emma Hutchinson. Delving deep into our kilo tubs, we suspected that her gorgeous frock might be the stuff of a photoshoot day out. Little did we know that it was actually Emma’s wedding day! An avid fan of the Custard Factory and it’s markets, we managed to track down the lady herself to find out about her fabulous vintage day out.

What brought you to The Custard Factory?
We got married in The Old Library. When Ben proposed this was the place he envisioned it would take place. We visit The Custard Factory a lot and I used to rent out art studios there in the past so we have lots of memories and associations with the place. I come to many markets at The Custard Factory as secondhand shopping is one of my favourite things to do – I will definitely be coming back for the kilo sale!

img_9306 Tell us more about your day!
It was a truely beautiful day surrounded by our nearest and dearest. Our 18 month old son Arlowe wouldn’t leave his dads arms throughout the entire ceremony which actually made it all the more special. Our amazing photographer took some incredible shots in the streets surrounding the venue using street art and smoke bombs as our back drop.We then danced into the night…..

Was your wedding influenced by vintage in any other way? Your dress was absolutely beautiful, did this theme carry through the rest of the day?
I love all things vintage and some of my favourite vintage pieces from home became part of the decoration. Upon entering The Old Library for the first time I absolutely loved it but everything was white so I knew a huge injection of colour was needed. I am an Art tutor at a Special Needs College so I made the majority of the decorations myself but I did buy some Mexican picado flags online to really provide that sense of celebration and colour. I also used embroidery hoops in an alternative way as wall decorations with streams of ribbons cascading down from them. We also had a touch of Mills and Boon incorporated into the table signs to honour the original use of the building. Name cards were old library cards I stamped guests names onto.

I loved my dress and was really going for a vintagy look and was very happy to find this dress on ASOS for a bargain price.

img_9309What tips would you give brides-to-be on planning their big vintage wedding day?
My biggest tip would be just to take a moment where it’s just the two of you at some part of the day to catch your breath and take it all in. A friend of ours did just that, took both our hands and whisked us into a quite room, sat us down and it was such a lovely few moments. The day goes so unbelievably fast!

How To Throw A Vintage Party!

12239294_10207910693509583_6806455297010522772_o

It’s been a busy month for birthdays at Vintage HQ – three out of four of our core team have celebrated their big day in the space of a fortnight! Whether there was something a little retro-magic about the month of May we don’t know, but we’re sure been having a fun time throwing some vintage birthday soirees to celebrate (armed with plenty of gin, of course!)

With that in mind, we wanted to share our top tips for throwing a great vintage-inspired party. Whether it be a birthday, a graduation surprise or simply just a ‘summer is finally on it’s way’ knees up, here are some things to consider to get your bash off to the perfect start.

12188178_10207910694349604_2840779316251187637_o

The setting
Many of you out there will be blessed with perfectly styled vintage homes – well done you! Having a party at home can save you quite a lot of money and create a relaxed, familiar environment for your guests – plus there’s no curfew! Although there is of course the nervousness that comes with a coaster-less drink set down on your teak table…

If you’re thinking of having a party at home, perhaps consider putting away some of your more valuables, or else closing off a bedroom/spare room for guests to leave their coats but not linger. If the idea is stressing you out or you have a large number of guests, perhaps consider local hire of a town hall or community centre – with a good theme, any hall can be transformed into vintage heaven – just ask us!

Decor
Despite our love of vintage, we’re a fairly modern bunch at Judy’s HQ – frills and frou frou just aren’t us (unless they fall into the delightfully kitsch category). We like to let vintage inform our design choices rather than dictate it, which is what you should do too. Prevent your decor from looking overbearing by sticking to a few key statement pieces – a hired in Tiki Bar, an amazing curtain photo backdrop, vintage-crockery or bold prints. All of these things at once might make guests feel like they’re in a museum – not a good look!

10515229_10207910691869542_2403083455849364829_o

Food and drinks
You’re going to need sustenance if you want to make it past 12pm! Catering rules suggest preparing an average of 3 canapés for each guest, although if your pals are like you might want to make a few extra! Jazz up your table with fancy plates and mix and match your crockery styles and sizes for an effortless vintage look. Top it all off with a cocktail trolley equipped with shakers, pretty glasses and umbrellas – ask guests to bring a bottle if you’re not quite sure what spirits to stock up with.

Entertainment
With a good set of friends, entertainment at your party needn’t be flashy – it’s amazing what ambience you can set just with an iPad and a killer Spotify playlist. If you fancy going big guns, hire a singer or vintage vinyl DJ – and get your requests in early!

12244752_10207910672469057_7598799833425843544_oThe Outfits
And lastly, the piece-de-resistance! An outfit can make or break your experience as a host/hostess, so make sure it’s something fabulous, fun and comfortable – there’s no point looking amazing if you can’t move an inch. Whether you’re asking your guests to stick to a theme or simply go wild, our events should be your first stop shop – you simply never know what one-off treasure you’re going to find!

1 Girl, 7 Dresses – Hayley’s Guide to Kilo Shopping

7 Days of Vintage Kilo Sale OutfitsWe’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – we get no bigger thrill at Vintage and Kilo HQ than seeing what our lovely shoppers have picked up at our events. Whether it’s an impulse bargain, a memory of their childhood or simply a piece that fits like a glove, we just love shopping vicariously through you. Not to mention the fact that it stops our own wardrobes from overflowing!

This week in Kilo-land, we got a lovely little treat on instagram when a tag popped up from Glasgow-based blogger and freelance writer Hayley Angell. Describing herself as a “Banter-loving Aussie with a big voice and even bigger bum – freelance writer, vintage-nut, maker & wearer of fancy brooches”, we knew she was one of us instantly. Tagging us in a weeklong blog series, Hayley shared the 7 dresses she picked up from our last kilo sale, clocking in at just £37 for the lot (plus two more vintage pieces). Impressed by her thrifty abilities, we were desperate to hear more…

Hi Hayley! How did you first hear about the Vintage Kilo Sale?
I saw the Glasgow sale on Facebook which beautifully coincided with a light-bulb moment that my ample backside rather lends itself to vintage-style, full-circle skirts! I had only recently moved to the city, so when a pal suggested we go along together, I snapped her hand off. I’d follow you around the country if I could!

How would you describe your personal style in a sentence?
“Vintage reproductions of classic vintage styles.” I adore the glamour and femininity of the 40s and 50s but generally via reproductions from the 80s/90s/00s given my ample curves.

What’s been your biggest buyers regret from the kilo?
A) Not buying more.  B) The infamous dress number 8. Who knew the 80s sailor-inspired polyester number with oversized white satin Chelsea collar and heavy seam right across the thighs wouldn’t work? I looked like Sailor Moon reimagined as a roast pork. But alas, it went back in the charity shop bag and I’ve probably since walked past someone wearing it with total dress envy!

And your favourite of the 7 dresses?
While Day 1 is pure me – casual, fun and wildly inappropriate for the Glasgow weather, I have to say Day 7. I put it on and feel like a movie star! Secretly, it’s 3 sizes too big, so I don’t button it down, I wear it as a wrap dress… it works!

Could you talk us through how you went about styling your dresses?
I’ve kept my styling pretty simple with vintage stud earrings, waist belt (my wardrobe staple) and head scarves. I’m not a great heel-wearer, so I tend to collect vintage-style midi heels and wedges from charity shops and markets as stores seem to stock only sky-high (I wish!) or flats.  I used to be quite picky in selecting accessories until I realised that a naff scarf/shoe/bracelet which coordinates/contrasts with your outfit will often trump a fab one that doesn’t! So, I pick an accent colour in my frock/top/skirt and accessorise to this colour. As a tip – I’d recommend getting yourself a basket and wearing it as a handbag. I must get stopped at least once a day with a lovely compliment!

What would be your best piece of advice for vintage virgins?
Just go along and have fun with it. Grab anything from the racks that catches your eye and don’t (ever!) look at the size. When I learned that sizes are completely irrelevant in vintage shopping (because there are so many variables like the style, country of origin, the trendiness of snug v loose fit at the time etc etc) it opened a whole new world of choice. I have dresses size 10-20, S-XXL in my wardrobe – so, if it looks like it’ll fit… throw it over your arm and keep going. When you’ve conquered the room, review all your grabs for the final shortlist and pay your respects to the Vintage Gods by hanging your unwanted’s back on the rack (besides, how else will I find my next vintage win?!). Was that 5 tips un-subtly disguised as 1!?

A huge thanks to Hayley for sharing her kilo wins – don’t forget to show us yours by tagging #kilobargains on Instagram and Twitter! If you’re in the mood for some shopping, check out our upcoming dates below…

Hello Yellow!

Vintage Christmas Gifts

We got the shock of our lives this morning when we looked at our calendar and realised that it was just 30 DAYS until Christmas! Two busy seasons of events have meant that the year has absolutely raced by, and suddenly we are found scurrying about in the cold, trying to remember all the distant cousins and friends on our Christmas card list and wondering just where we left the sticky tape.

But worry not! There’s a lot that can be done in a month, especially when you have our events at your disposal! For the vintage lovers in your life, here are some top picks sure to cause a look of delight underneath the christmas tree.

12032206_10153681021226798_3199850229529033608_n

Vintage Print
An affordable but thoughtful gift, a classic print from a favourite era is a great vintage christmas gift for a friend who is decorating their house, or even a student looking to inject a little more personality into their student halls. Opt for a hollywood icon or a classic film poster – the choice is yours.

12191712_10153697965881798_5717463739552229176_n

Tea Set
Love a good gossip with your BFF? A vintage tea set will add a touch of sophistication to your next get together. We love this matched set but separate pieces work just as well – present in a hamper with some exotic tea and biscuits and you’ve got yourself one great gift!

12195826_10153693335926798_1484244028899218456_n

Vintage Jewellery
For those with a more lavish budget, an amazing piece of vintage jewellery can be a showstopper of a present. Think carefully about what your recipient would actually wear – there’s no point choosing a ornate bracelet if they’re much more of a necklace person. Purse feeling a little delicate? Our fairs and kilo sales are full to bursting with costume jewellery that makes for a great stocking filler.

A Statement Coat
At this time of year, everybody has that one friend who is constantly shivering. Make their vintage christmas day with an amazing coat – rummage for a 60s-90s gem at the kilo sale or opt for a more mid-century number at the fair. This season, we’re a big fan of jewel tones- just make sure it’s a colour they like!

Retro Inspiration from London Fashion Week SS16

We’d be a little hypocritical at Judy HQ if our personal wardrobes weren’t at least 90% vintage, but we’re sure we’re not alone in getting a wee bit excited everytime LondonFashion Week rolls around. A veritable whos-who of front-rowers, the street style, the soundtracks and wacky hair and makeup…we love it all! While we were not lucky enough to attend London Fashion Week ourselves this year, we did enjoy picking our favourite retro-inspired styles out on the Vogue website. Tres chic…

orla kiely ss16Orla Kiely
Kilo Manager Jenessa is a huge fan of Orla Kiely and her 60s-inspired floral prints, so it was no surprise to find her coveting almost everything from the collection! Set amongst a crazy golf scene, purple pastels held their own against vibrant yellows and of course, THAT clarks footwear collaboration. We best get saving our pennies…

holly fulton ss16Holly Fulton
Feeling more seventies? Studio Fulton is your place to be. We loved the autumn-pallette-meets-summer-shapes that makes this collection so wearable all year round. Catch us in that flare and blouse combo…or maybe a statement dress or two…we can’t decide!

jeremy scott moschino ss16

Jeremy Scott
Lead designer at Moschino, Jeremy Scott has been a kitsch favourite for a while. This season, he took things to the 80s height of Barbie once more, contrasting with edgy prints and neon colours. Not for the faint-hearted, but those electric blue boots have our heart.

mansur gavriel 2Mansur Gavriel
The colours, the prints, the super-cool models…we’re in love with everything about this Italian accessory designers collection. While the emphasis was on the shoes and bags, we can’t help but wish they’d whip up those pinafores for consumer sale as well…we want every colour!

Feeling inspired to grab some fashion-forward garments for your wardrobe? We’ve got a vast calendar of kilo sales and fashion fairs to get you kitted out in the sort of retrowear that will be influencing the catwalks for years to come. Let’s face it, vintage never goes out of style! Check our events tab for more information.

AW15 Vintage Essentials

Autumn is here – are we the only ones who are sneakily a bit pleased? We love summer as much as the next person, but there’s something about layers and snuggly fabrics that get us a little bit excited. Plus of course, autumn marks the return of fair, flea AND kilo season – result!

When it comes to decking out your wardrobe for AW15, it can be easy to get swept up in new trends you’ll only wear once or rely on tatty favourites that are falling apart at the seams. Wearing vintage is all about quality and finding style over fad trends, which is why it’s such a great investment for colder months. To avoid a room full of clobber or regret purchases, here is our checklist of the key items to look out for at our upcoming events –

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 11.27.08Warm Coat
A good coat is a winter essential. While a Princess or Pea shape might be desirable for formal events, we recommend a strong sheepskin or faux fur/fur trimmedpiece of outerwear for true warmth that will last you seasons to come. If you’re partial to a trend, look out for a leather or suede trench – these can also be deceptively cosy if layered well with a good knit.

Pussybow BlousePussybow Blouse
The pussybow is a classic vintage style – dress up with a smart skirt or down under dungarees or a pinafore. Bonus points for busy patterns and prints – the more fun the better!

Check Skirt

Tartan or Woolen Skirt
You simply can’t go wrong with a good tartan or check print skirt – look out for wool or thick woven fabrics to keep yourself cosy. These look great with blouses, tightly fitted jumpers and brogues.

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 11.01.15Statement Jumper
Speaking of jumpers, we love a statement sweater! These always room in a wardrobe for a few plain numbers, but we’re a fan of the quirkier prints…just remember to keep an eye out for those bobbles!

Doc Martens

Brogues or Doc Martens
We at Judy’s love a good heel or mule, but there’s nothing worse than cold feet in the autumn. Spare yourself the heartache by investing in a sturdy pair of brogues or doc martens – they may take some wearing in but will keep out any adverse weather with ease. Even better – they go with everything!

Skirt SuitSkirt Suit
For days where you want to look effortlessly retro, a good skirt suit can save you plenty of dressing-up time in the morning. Wear yours with a simple plain top underneath instead of a blouse – it will stop things looking too formal. Keep an open mind when shopping for your skirt suit – some simple and affordable tailoring can turn a great fabric into a showstopper.

Sturdy luggage

Versatile Handbag or Case
for travel, for the office, for sneaky shopping trips…a good-sized bag is an essential. We love doctor, trunk and hardcase styles, but feel free to experiment – as long as it’s big enough to fit the kitchen sink, it’s probably a keeper!

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 11.32.35Coloured and thick knit tights
Available from very low prices and in a multitide of patterns and finishes, a good set of tights can elevate a plain outfit. Opt for ones with plenty of stretch and be sure to follow the proper washing instructions – nobody likes baggy elastic!Emily Party Dress

Party Dress
The pièce de résistance of any Autumn Winter wardrobe, the party dress is a must. For Halloween, Christmas and New Years, you need sparkles, embellishments and most of all, a good fit. Our events offer a multitude of opportunities to pick up your sartorial soulmate – just check out fair manager Emily in her array of Judy’s festive frocks!
