Vogue 100 Manchester: A Century Of Style

condenast

styleetc

Well well well…it looks like summer has finally arrived! Like classic brits we’ve rejoiced at the sudden sunshine, but like the dodgy-tanline-phobics we truly are, we’ve also enjoyed spending our summer downtime indoors.

And where better to spend a lazy day than in the cool surrounds of a museum? We’ve been fans of the Manchester Art gallery for some time, but when we discovered that it was to be the new home of the Vogue exhibition, we hotfooted it across the pennines faster than you could say ‘couture darling!’

A celebration of the whopping 100 years of Vogue’s history, ‘A century of style’ is a must-see for both fashion and photography fans. Seeing those iconic images of supermodels from the ages in glorious technicolour really reinforces the power of both styling and advertising, as well as the changing demands of publishing. It’s all here in a succinct exhibition – the uptight, unobtainable 1940s of couture, the cheeky fun of the 90s Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss era, right up to our modern days obsession with ‘celebrity’ coverstars. We could have spent hours pouring over each image – not bad for a free exhibition!

With back issues laid out in glass cabinets, a trip to the Vogue 100 it’s the perfect opportunity to brush up on your fashion history. A true fashion bible of our times, we can barely believe it’s already 100 years old. Long live Vogue!

Archive By Alexa – Vintage On The High Street

Here’s a statement that probably won’t surprise you: we love Alexa Chung. Who doesn’t? A timeless fashionista with a cracking sense of humour, she’s been one of our go-to girls for style inspiration for a very long time.

Whilst we’re normally all about the real deal when it comes to vintage, we embrace any opportunity to bring retro styles to the masses. Which is why we did a little squeal when we heard all about Alexa’s ‘Archive By Alexa’ collaboration with high-street giants Marks & Spencer – a capsule collection based around some of the brand’s most classic styles and prints from the last eight decades.

Founded in our very hometown of Leeds in 1884, M&S has been a stalwart of British wardrobes for decades, but only recently has it become fashionable again with a younger audience through trend-led collections – think 70s knitwear, jumpsuits and strong paisley prints. With Alexa’s new line, they once again solidify themselves as a go-to brand for quality and comfort – and who knows, maybe we’ll be selling these designs at our fairs in 30 years time!

Hello Yellow!

Spring has sprung! Well sorta – you might have to look for the daffodils underneath the frost at the moment. But nonetheless, we’re loving the promise of warmer weather and a new season of events just around the corner. In typical Judy style, there’s only one way to celebrate – hello yellow!

Across our social media, we’re embracing our favourite hue of clothing, furniture and accessories. Captured your own retro photo in the sunny shade? We’d love to see it! Tag us in #helloyellow and we’ll reshare your images to create a perky feed that’ll ward off the last of the winter blues. Check out the best of our feeds so far!

Judy’s Fashion Police – Our top picks from the Grammy’s, BAFTA’s and Elle Style Awards 2016

Awards season is in full swing! We don’t think we’re alone when we say that we’ve been tuned into E! news on constant rotation, catching up with all the winners, losers and of course, the frocks that everyone is talking about.

It’s not really our style to critique the looks we didn’t like so much (RIP the silver tongue of Fashion Police’s warden Joan Rivers), but we are all for championing the best looks from the red carpet. This season is all about colour, glitter and flowing full-lengths…let’s get into it!

Screen Shot 2016-02-24 at 11.30.53

THE GRAMMY’S 2016
The musical event of the year, the Grammy’s always sees it’s fair share of controversial and creative outfits. No huge dramas to be had this year unfortunately, but it’s fair to say that everybody was talking about Lady Gaga’s stunning homage to David Bowie, complete with flame-red locks. We love the fashion-forward retro shades of Florence Welch and Lianne La Havas gowns, but we have to say that our fave look was presenter Kaley Cuoco – the ‘Big Bang Theory’ star looked fun and effortless in a quirky playsuit that we’re coveting for our own wardrobe (if only our abs looked that good)

Screen Shot 2016-02-24 at 11.37.56

THE BAFTAS 2016
For timeless glamour and classy hemlines, the BAFTA’s a ceremony to rely on. Stars often look chic but as lovers of the one-off, we’re sometimes left feeling a little uninspired. Not this year – stars like Isla Fisher and Gemma Chan managed to subvert the classic shades of black, white and silver with a hint of Hollywood screen siren. Kudos also to Cate Blanchett in a stunning Alexander McQueen, but it was breakout star Bel Powley  who really caught our eye – the glitzy Gucci rainbow gown with gold platforms was super-70s and totally befitting of her role in 2015’s excellent ‘The Diary Of A Teenage Girl’.
Screen Shot 2016-02-24 at 11.31.27

ELLE STYLE AWARDS 2016
Oh Elle, an awards ceremony after our own heart! Dedicated to inspirational women, we’d certainly love to gatecrash this party and get some serious girlcrush vibes underway. The informal sense of fun is reflected on the red carpet – models Suki Waterhouse and Karlie Kloss both went for traditional styles with a hint of youthfullness in the neckline. We love Paloma’s fluffy jumper, but we’re also pretty obsessed with Kate Moss’s younger sister Lottie and her barely-there tinfoil number that brings back some amazing 90s memories. We hope there was a big fur coat just out of shot…

All of those outfits and we still have the Brits and the Oscars to go! Tweet us @judysvintagefair to tell us your fave, our even show us your own red-carpet look…we’d love to share our favourites!

Retro-inspired halloween costumes on a budget

Halloween is right round the corner! Whether you’re planning a huge party, a spooky movie marathon or a night trick-or-treating, their is one essential to be had – a great costume.

If, like us, you’ve left your outfit to the very last minute, do not despair! Skip the boring cat ears and vampire teeth and opt for one of our fun throwback looks – made up of pieces you can actually wear again!

pic4Cher and Dion from Clueless
Fashion stalwarts of the 90s, Cher and Dion are a cringe-free option for any BFF duo. The rules are fairly simple – stick to pink and yellow, accessorize with headgear and add in as much tartan as humanly possible. Altogether now: “as if?!’. 2f4d393b882b4629188b99a86bfb91a1

Wednesday Adams
All black everything – this look couldn’t be simpler! The collar is essential; if you can’t find a suitable 60s dress, simply pop a dress shirt under a jumper dress – it will keep you toasty on that trick or treat round!

Rosie The Riveter
Feel like channeling some old school feminism this Halloween without breaking too far away from a 40s/50s wardrobe? Rosie The Riveter is the look for you. The headscarf, navy blouse and high-waist jeans (Freddies of Pinewood have some great options) can all be sourced easily, and some extra party glam added with traditional mid-century make-up.Fresh-Prince-Carlton

Will and Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bell Air
Want to make use of a technicolour wardrobe? The Fresh Prince is the perfect opportunity to sport those neons. Whether you’re a Will or a Carlton, this look is super 90s and can be catered for easily with a quick rummage round our kilo sale!

Margo and Ritchie Tenenbaum
If you’d rather look classy than crude this Halloween, the Tenenbaum look i instantly recognisable while making good use of items you probably already have in your wardrobe (or can buy from our fair!). The devil is in the detail – the cute side parting, big sunglasses and head bandage are all simple additions to a daytime-acceptable outfit. Perfect for those in a rush to a party!
a04e94f7726aa844197ad5a5f88099c9The Twins from The Shining
It wouldn’t be Halloween without at least one really creepy option, and it doesn’t get much scarier than the twins from classic horror film The Shining. Best achieved with a similar-looking pal, everything much match – and you can have a lot of fun getting the fake blood exactly right!

Looking for the finishing touches for your costume? Why not pop down to one of our events this weekend?

Judy turns 10…and we want YOU to party with us!

mad-men-party-flickr_725x377-1365199482

A lot can happen in ten years. It can be the difference between childhood and adulthood, between a start-up business and an established one, even the difference between what is considered vintage and what isn’t!

One thing hasn’t changed in the ten years of Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair – we still absolutely love what we do. Vintage runs through our veins (along with gin and cake) and we simply wouldn’t have it any other way than to share our passion with so many of you fabulous people, right across the country. Which is why we want YOU to be part of our decade celebrations!

It is our fans who have put us where we are, and to show our gratitude, we are giving away 10 FREE TICKETS (and a plus one each) to our exclusive 10th birthday party, taking place at an incredible London location on the 6th November. Expect goodie bags, canapés, amazing cake and LOTS of dancing – we can’t wait!

In the spirit of celebration, we’re not asking anything to enter – no grand gestures, no bribes, just a simple ‘like’ and a comment on our facebook page. Keep your peepers peeled for the link – we will be picking our winners at random to be as fair as possible.

We can’t wait to party with you! Of course, you’ll need a great outfit – why not pop down to one of our next few events?

Record Breakers!

12068808_1143039205708926_2960532416107081735_oWe don’t like to brag at Judy’s HQ, but we do believe in sharing good news! After a long (not so hot) summer, we threw ourselves back into fair season with a bang, throwing up some of our best ever events across the fair, flea and kilo.

First up was the Furniture Flea in Bethnal Green, with a whopping 2500 through the door! You came and shopped in your droves, picking up all manner of retro cushions, lamps and furniture to help give your homes that desirable autumn glow. No better time of year to decorate if you ask us!

12087041_1143041239042056_6956329713377597568_o Next was the Bristol Kilo, which was positively heaving with new freshers picking up a whole semester’s worth of threads. Due to a completely unexpected turnout we did have some queuing to allow everyone to shop in safety and comfort within the relatively small Bristol Paintworks, but would like to thank all of our customers for being mega patient with us – well over 1700 of you left with bulging bags and smiling faces!

12113382_1143041509042029_2290271892363468734_oLastly was our almighty flagship, Judy’s Vintage Fair. We were expecting a great day when we returned to Bethnal Green, but what we weren’t expecting was 2700 of you!!! We also had a stonker of a day in Manchester – check out some shots in this post courtesy of the lovely Alan A Andrew photography (more available here)

Phew, it’s time for a lie down! We want to offer a great big thankyou and a virtual slab of cake to every single one of for coming out – what a way to celebrate our tenth year! If you’d like to join in the fun, here is a list of our upcoming events this October and November.
