Vintage Christmas Gifts

We got the shock of our lives this morning when we looked at our calendar and realised that it was just 30 DAYS until Christmas! Two busy seasons of events have meant that the year has absolutely raced by, and suddenly we are found scurrying about in the cold, trying to remember all the distant cousins and friends on our Christmas card list and wondering just where we left the sticky tape.

But worry not! There’s a lot that can be done in a month, especially when you have our events at your disposal! For the vintage lovers in your life, here are some top picks sure to cause a look of delight underneath the christmas tree.

Vintage Print
An affordable but thoughtful gift, a classic print from a favourite era is a great vintage christmas gift for a friend who is decorating their house, or even a student looking to inject a little more personality into their student halls. Opt for a hollywood icon or a classic film poster – the choice is yours.

Tea Set
Love a good gossip with your BFF? A vintage tea set will add a touch of sophistication to your next get together. We love this matched set but separate pieces work just as well – present in a hamper with some exotic tea and biscuits and you’ve got yourself one great gift!

Vintage Jewellery
For those with a more lavish budget, an amazing piece of vintage jewellery can be a showstopper of a present. Think carefully about what your recipient would actually wear – there’s no point choosing a ornate bracelet if they’re much more of a necklace person. Purse feeling a little delicate? Our fairs and kilo sales are full to bursting with costume jewellery that makes for a great stocking filler.

A Statement Coat
At this time of year, everybody has that one friend who is constantly shivering. Make their vintage christmas day with an amazing coat – rummage for a 60s-90s gem at the kilo sale or opt for a more mid-century number at the fair. This season, we’re a big fan of jewel tones- just make sure it’s a colour they like!

Retro-inspired halloween costumes on a budget

Halloween is right round the corner! Whether you’re planning a huge party, a spooky movie marathon or a night trick-or-treating, their is one essential to be had – a great costume.

If, like us, you’ve left your outfit to the very last minute, do not despair! Skip the boring cat ears and vampire teeth and opt for one of our fun throwback looks – made up of pieces you can actually wear again!

pic4Cher and Dion from Clueless
Fashion stalwarts of the 90s, Cher and Dion are a cringe-free option for any BFF duo. The rules are fairly simple – stick to pink and yellow, accessorize with headgear and add in as much tartan as humanly possible. Altogether now: “as if?!’. 2f4d393b882b4629188b99a86bfb91a1

Wednesday Adams
All black everything – this look couldn’t be simpler! The collar is essential; if you can’t find a suitable 60s dress, simply pop a dress shirt under a jumper dress – it will keep you toasty on that trick or treat round!

Rosie The Riveter
Feel like channeling some old school feminism this Halloween without breaking too far away from a 40s/50s wardrobe? Rosie The Riveter is the look for you. The headscarf, navy blouse and high-waist jeans (Freddies of Pinewood have some great options) can all be sourced easily, and some extra party glam added with traditional mid-century make-up.Fresh-Prince-Carlton

Will and Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bell Air
Want to make use of a technicolour wardrobe? The Fresh Prince is the perfect opportunity to sport those neons. Whether you’re a Will or a Carlton, this look is super 90s and can be catered for easily with a quick rummage round our kilo sale!

Margo and Ritchie Tenenbaum
If you’d rather look classy than crude this Halloween, the Tenenbaum look i instantly recognisable while making good use of items you probably already have in your wardrobe (or can buy from our fair!). The devil is in the detail – the cute side parting, big sunglasses and head bandage are all simple additions to a daytime-acceptable outfit. Perfect for those in a rush to a party!
a04e94f7726aa844197ad5a5f88099c9The Twins from The Shining
It wouldn’t be Halloween without at least one really creepy option, and it doesn’t get much scarier than the twins from classic horror film The Shining. Best achieved with a similar-looking pal, everything much match – and you can have a lot of fun getting the fake blood exactly right!

Looking for the finishing touches for your costume? Why not pop down to one of our events this weekend?

Crazy for Capes!

Screen Shot 2015-10-21 at 11.35.30Where has this sudden freezing weather come from? Not that we’re complaining – it’s coat season! Sure, we hate having to cover up our favourite frocks and dealing with the constant inside-outside temperature adaption, but there is something about a cosy extra layer that just fills us with joy.

This season, there is one coat that has stolen our heart more than most – the cape, Favoured by everyone from girl-detective Nancy Drew to modern-day fashionista Blair Waldorf of Gossip Girl, there is something about the cape that speaks of whimsy, fun and downright style. They’re notoriously easy to wear – paired with a simple pencil skirt, brogue heels and a good-quality roll neck, you’re set for some serious sleuthing – magnifying glass optional.

Naturally, Vintage is best – check out this beautiful welsh woollen number that our fair manager Emily picked up from on our our traders! Welsh wool is synonymous with vintage capes – look out for he more unusual colourways and a hole-free lining to make sure you’ll stay toasty.

Feeling the cape trend? Pop along to one of our winter fairs and you might just get lucky! Until then, feast your eyes on our cape moodboard to get you in the spirit…

Record Breakers!

12068808_1143039205708926_2960532416107081735_oWe don’t like to brag at Judy’s HQ, but we do believe in sharing good news! After a long (not so hot) summer, we threw ourselves back into fair season with a bang, throwing up some of our best ever events across the fair, flea and kilo.

First up was the Furniture Flea in Bethnal Green, with a whopping 2500 through the door! You came and shopped in your droves, picking up all manner of retro cushions, lamps and furniture to help give your homes that desirable autumn glow. No better time of year to decorate if you ask us!

12087041_1143041239042056_6956329713377597568_o Next was the Bristol Kilo, which was positively heaving with new freshers picking up a whole semester’s worth of threads. Due to a completely unexpected turnout we did have some queuing to allow everyone to shop in safety and comfort within the relatively small Bristol Paintworks, but would like to thank all of our customers for being mega patient with us – well over 1700 of you left with bulging bags and smiling faces!

12113382_1143041509042029_2290271892363468734_oLastly was our almighty flagship, Judy’s Vintage Fair. We were expecting a great day when we returned to Bethnal Green, but what we weren’t expecting was 2700 of you!!! We also had a stonker of a day in Manchester – check out some shots in this post courtesy of the lovely Alan A Andrew photography (more available here)

Phew, it’s time for a lie down! We want to offer a great big thankyou and a virtual slab of cake to every single one of for coming out – what a way to celebrate our tenth year! If you’d like to join in the fun, here is a list of our upcoming events this October and November.

Retro Inspiration from London Fashion Week SS16

We’d be a little hypocritical at Judy HQ if our personal wardrobes weren’t at least 90% vintage, but we’re sure we’re not alone in getting a wee bit excited everytime LondonFashion Week rolls around. A veritable whos-who of front-rowers, the street style, the soundtracks and wacky hair and makeup…we love it all! While we were not lucky enough to attend London Fashion Week ourselves this year, we did enjoy picking our favourite retro-inspired styles out on the Vogue website. Tres chic…

orla kiely ss16Orla Kiely
Kilo Manager Jenessa is a huge fan of Orla Kiely and her 60s-inspired floral prints, so it was no surprise to find her coveting almost everything from the collection! Set amongst a crazy golf scene, purple pastels held their own against vibrant yellows and of course, THAT clarks footwear collaboration. We best get saving our pennies…

holly fulton ss16Holly Fulton
Feeling more seventies? Studio Fulton is your place to be. We loved the autumn-pallette-meets-summer-shapes that makes this collection so wearable all year round. Catch us in that flare and blouse combo…or maybe a statement dress or two…we can’t decide!

jeremy scott moschino ss16

Jeremy Scott
Lead designer at Moschino, Jeremy Scott has been a kitsch favourite for a while. This season, he took things to the 80s height of Barbie once more, contrasting with edgy prints and neon colours. Not for the faint-hearted, but those electric blue boots have our heart.

mansur gavriel 2Mansur Gavriel
The colours, the prints, the super-cool models…we’re in love with everything about this Italian accessory designers collection. While the emphasis was on the shoes and bags, we can’t help but wish they’d whip up those pinafores for consumer sale as well…we want every colour!

Feeling inspired to grab some fashion-forward garments for your wardrobe? We’ve got a vast calendar of kilo sales and fashion fairs to get you kitted out in the sort of retrowear that will be influencing the catwalks for years to come. Let’s face it, vintage never goes out of style! Check our events tab for more information.

AW15 Vintage Essentials

Autumn is here – are we the only ones who are sneakily a bit pleased? We love summer as much as the next person, but there’s something about layers and snuggly fabrics that get us a little bit excited. Plus of course, autumn marks the return of fair, flea AND kilo season – result!

When it comes to decking out your wardrobe for AW15, it can be easy to get swept up in new trends you’ll only wear once or rely on tatty favourites that are falling apart at the seams. Wearing vintage is all about quality and finding style over fad trends, which is why it’s such a great investment for colder months. To avoid a room full of clobber or regret purchases, here is our checklist of the key items to look out for at our upcoming events –

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 11.27.08Warm Coat
A good coat is a winter essential. While a Princess or Pea shape might be desirable for formal events, we recommend a strong sheepskin or faux fur/fur trimmedpiece of outerwear for true warmth that will last you seasons to come. If you’re partial to a trend, look out for a leather or suede trench – these can also be deceptively cosy if layered well with a good knit.

Pussybow BlousePussybow Blouse
The pussybow is a classic vintage style – dress up with a smart skirt or down under dungarees or a pinafore. Bonus points for busy patterns and prints – the more fun the better!

Check Skirt

Tartan or Woolen Skirt
You simply can’t go wrong with a good tartan or check print skirt – look out for wool or thick woven fabrics to keep yourself cosy. These look great with blouses, tightly fitted jumpers and brogues.

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 11.01.15Statement Jumper
Speaking of jumpers, we love a statement sweater! These always room in a wardrobe for a few plain numbers, but we’re a fan of the quirkier prints…just remember to keep an eye out for those bobbles!

Doc Martens

Brogues or Doc Martens
We at Judy’s love a good heel or mule, but there’s nothing worse than cold feet in the autumn. Spare yourself the heartache by investing in a sturdy pair of brogues or doc martens – they may take some wearing in but will keep out any adverse weather with ease. Even better – they go with everything!

Skirt SuitSkirt Suit
For days where you want to look effortlessly retro, a good skirt suit can save you plenty of dressing-up time in the morning. Wear yours with a simple plain top underneath instead of a blouse – it will stop things looking too formal. Keep an open mind when shopping for your skirt suit – some simple and affordable tailoring can turn a great fabric into a showstopper.

Sturdy luggage

Versatile Handbag or Case
for travel, for the office, for sneaky shopping trips…a good-sized bag is an essential. We love doctor, trunk and hardcase styles, but feel free to experiment – as long as it’s big enough to fit the kitchen sink, it’s probably a keeper!

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 11.32.35Coloured and thick knit tights
Available from very low prices and in a multitide of patterns and finishes, a good set of tights can elevate a plain outfit. Opt for ones with plenty of stretch and be sure to follow the proper washing instructions – nobody likes baggy elastic!Emily Party Dress

Party Dress
The pièce de résistance of any Autumn Winter wardrobe, the party dress is a must. For Halloween, Christmas and New Years, you need sparkles, embellishments and most of all, a good fit. Our events offer a multitude of opportunities to pick up your sartorial soulmate – just check out fair manager Emily in her array of Judy’s festive frocks!

Win Free Kilo Entry – FOR A YEAR! Our Summer Survey

Screen Shot 2015-07-09 at 12.59.13

We like to think that we’re doing a pretty good job over at Vintage Kilo HQ, but as we all know, complacency is never chic! During our quieter summer season, kilo events manager Jenessa has been beavering away on lots of new ideas and innovations for the next season of vintage kilo sales, but we need YOUR help – with an added little prize giving of course!

Put simply, we want to know what you love best about The Vintage Kilo Sale, and what you’d like to see improved. We’ve made it super easy for you to show us your thoughts – simply full in our survey here.

As an extra little incentive, everybody who fills in the survey (and remembers to enter their email address in the final box) will be entered into a prize draw to win FREE ENTRY for them and a friend for ONE FULL YEAR of kilo sales, plus one free kilo each at their first event of choice. Don’t say we’re not good to you!

For those not in the know, The Vintage Kilo Sale is the younger sister of Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair, with a fun rummage twist. Established in 2009, we stock clothing from the 1960-1990s on rails and in large tubs, but nothing is individually priced – instead, you simply grab the items you like, pop them in one of our purple bags and then are charged by weight – £15 per kilo, which normally equates to 3-5 items. Bargain eh? For all our event info and updates visit us on facebook here.

INTERVIEW: Elizabeth Sankey talks ‘Beyond Clueless’

Ever wish your life was like a 90s teen movie? A celebration of everything great about the decade of cinema, Beyond Clueless is a documentary like no other. Getting to the heart of boys, bleachers and pep rallies, the 2015 movie has made waves across independent cinema and looks set to continue it’s success having hit Netflix very recently.  It’s crowning moment? The soundtrack. We caught up with Elizabeth Sankey of nostalgia-loving duo Summer Camp, a band whose score brings the film to life…

Screen Shot 2015-06-17 at 10.48.39

Hi Elizabeth! Firstly, how did the job with Beyond Clueless come about? I understand you’ve been friends with director Charlie Lyne for quite some time…

Hey!  Yes we’ve known Charlie for years I used to try to get him to write for an online magazine I edited years ago, but he was already doing his own thing and being much better than anyone else.  Then we ended up living round the corner from each other and becoming proper real life friends. Jeremy (Elizabeth’s bandmate) and I both love him very much.

How have the 90s influenced your day-to-day music making in summer camp? What music were you listening to in the 90s?

In the 90s I think I was listening to whatever the bus driver chose to play on the school coach I had to ride for two hours a day.  There are a lot of pop songs from that period I hate but know all the lyrics too.  I loved Blur more than anything in the world, still do really.  As for influencing our music, I’m a very nostalgic person and I love looking at things from the past for inspiration.  Especially films and TV shows.  It’s the wonderful thing of those worlds looking like something you lived through and knew, but at the same time it’s total fantasy.  Also the fashion was so dope then.

If you could be any 90s character yourself, who would you be?

I think I would like to be a cross between Rayanne Graff and Angela Chase and Jeremy would be a cross between Jordan Catalano and Brian Krakow.

P9133561

Let’s talk fashion. You’ve created quite a name for yourself online for recreating famous outfits from decades past – who’s been the most fun to dress up as?

I loved every single dress up!  I always wanted to be an actress, and I’ve always been into clothes, so it’s kind of the perfect combination of that.  I liked dressing Jeremy up as Duckie from ‘Pretty In Pink’ as I think Duckie looked so incredible and I got to give Jeremy a quiff.  Dressing up as a character from ‘The Craft’ was also really fun, wearing black lipstick and a nose ring.  I like how different clothes make you feel different, I find it quite therapeutic to put something on and feel very much myself, but in a new way.  It’s deep.

What tips would you give people when looking to dress in full vintage, without ending up looking like they’re in fancy dress?

Oh man, in my 20s I only wore vintage, and it’s totally do-able but you have to commit.  I always find looking at photos of people, or characters in films and TV, really helpful.  Picking someone who looks a bit like you and is the same size and shape.  Then you can sort of piece together outfits based on that.  You won’t find exact copies obviously, but you can get the jist of it.  Also invest your money in good coats and jackets and get them dry cleaned.  You’ll wear them again the next year and they can just make the whole outfit feel special.  Also, pick fabrics like cotton, suede and denim that last longer, and look for details like embroidery. I’m so into embroidery at the moment. I also recommend getting good with a sewing machine. I used to buy loads of maxi dresses and turn them mini and so on.  And you can buy stuff that is too big for you and then take it in.

Where do you normally shop for your clothing?

I do all my shopping online these days.  I work from home so I’m always in and can get things delivered.  Plus I’m not a fan of changing rooms, I like to try stuff on in my own house.  However, when it comes to vintage I can spend hours in a shop rifling through everything, it’s always good on tour to look at the different shops and I have to say, Manchester is one of the best cities in the world for vintage.

So back to movie – why should people go watch it?

Beyond Clueless is smart, funny, beautiful and sexy – it’s the best teen film I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen them all. There are very exciting things planned for the film in the future but they’re all secret…

For more information on Beyond Clueless, check out their website here. To see what Elizabeth picked up when she came to our kilo sale, visit her blog here
